January Book of the Month
Apierogon
by Colum McCann
Apeirogon by Colum McCann is a novel based on the true stories of two fathers — Rami Elhanan, an Israeli, and Bassam Aramin, a Palestinian — whose daughters are killed in separate incidents of violence tied to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Devastated, both men choose an unexpected path: instead of turning to hatred, they join the Parents Circle–Families Forum, a group of bereaved families working toward reconciliation.
The book is structured in 1,001 short sections, moving in and out of their lives, the region’s history, and reflections on grief and forgiveness. As Rami and Bassam travel together sharing their stories, they form a deep friendship and demonstrate how empathy can become a powerful act of resistance. Ultimately, Apeirogon invites readers to see the conflict — and the cost of violence — from many sides, while holding onto a fragile but persistent sense of hope.

Song of Achilles
by Madeline Miller
The Song of Achilles retells the Greek myth of Achilles and the Trojan War from the perspective of Patroclus, a sensitive, exiled prince who becomes Achilles’ closest companion — and eventually, his lover.
Patroclus is banished to the court of King Peleus, where he meets Achilles, the son of Peleus and the sea-goddess Thetis. Though Achilles is destined for glory and greatness, he chooses Patroclus as his friend. The boys grow up together, training under the centaur Chiron, where their bond deepens into an intimate and devoted love.
When Helen of Sparta is taken to Troy, the Greek kings are bound by oath to retrieve her. Achilles is called to war, compelled by fate and prophecy to win everlasting fame. Patroclus goes with him, even though he fears the brutality and the cost.
At Troy, Achilles’ skill on the battlefield becomes legendary, but his refusal to fight over a dispute with King Agamemnon shifts the tide of war — and ultimately leads to tragedy. Patroclus, desperate to save lives and protect Achilles’ honor, makes a fateful decision that changes everything.
Their love — enduring, flawed, and deeply human — becomes the emotional core of the story, reshaping the familiar myth into something intimate and heartbreaking.
