Backpack Lending Library

Exploring the Los Padres National Forest opens the door to wonder, curiosity, and discovery—and our Lending Library Backpack Initiative brings that experience to life. Each themed backpack will include books, field guides, and activity kits that encourage children and families to connect with the land around them. From stargazing charts to wildlife identification cards, these mobile libraries make learning immersive and hands-on, inspiring stewardship of the forest while fostering a love for nature.

Through Books in the Woods, literacy becomes an adventure. By combining storytelling with outdoor exploration, we give children access to resources they may not have at home and encourage families to read, learn, and create together. The backpacks empower kids to build their own connections between books and the natural world, helping them develop not only stronger reading skills but also a deeper sense of place and belonging within their community.
